Deftones and Rise Against are currently embarked on a colossal North American co-headlining tour, with special guest support Thrice and Three Trapped Tigers (on the East Coast only). The ongoing trek stormed New York for a huge show at the Jones Beach Theater on June 13, where a good amount of fans showed up for what would be an enjoyable Tuesday night rock show out on 'The Island' (aka Long Island).

Deftones closed out the night, kicking off their set with Around the Fur classic "Headup," which caused an immediate uproar with fans throwing down in the exclusive general admission pit section and those behind them, confined to designated seating but proudly on their feet with horns and fists in the air. The band continued with "My Own Summer (Shove It)" and "Lhabia" (both also on Around the Fur), with frontman Chino Moreno in high spirits, constantly soaring in the air, bouncing off his down center step riser and occasionally two-step salsa dancing, despite having injured his foot in Koln last month.

Powering through their set (in an attempt to comply with the strict 11PM curfew), Deftones fired out the riffy "Swerve City" from 2012's Koi No Yokan, which set off a sea of bouncing fans from the front to as far as the nosebleed seats high in the sky. By the way and in-case you missed it, the band will be releasing a “Swerve City” beer this month. Deftones' groundbreaking album White Pony received the spotlight next, as "Digital Bath," "Back to School (Mini Maggit)" and "Elite" blared through the venue's powerful sound system, splitting ears and bringing back millennial alternative rock memories for many in attendance (including myself). Chino didn't hesitate to get close and personal with fans (as usual), delivering his customary in-your-face lyrical spit to lucky concert goers in the front row of the barricade.

Last year saw the release of Deftones' eighth studio album Gore (scoring the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200 chart), which they supported with a tour with Refused in 2016, hitting Coney Island in Brooklyn, where they highlighted the album appropriately. This time around, the group focused on their earlier material, dishing out only one lone song off of Gore, the serene "Phantom Bride" (which also has a signature beer). Continuing with tracks from their 2010 LP Diamond Eyes, the band played "You've Seen the Butcher," "Diamond Eyes" and set closer "Rocket Skates."  Finally, "Rosemary" (Koi No Yokan), "Change (In the House of Flies)" (White Pony) and "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" (Around the Fur) rounded out the end of the band's set.

Fresh off the release of their eighth studio album Wolves, co-headliners Rise Against flooded the stage prior to Deftones' set, performing songs off of said new LP, including new ragers "The Violence," "Welcome to the Breakdown" and "Wolves." The band showered their set with an abundance of classic tracks from their 15-plus year career, spreading forth "Ready to Fall," "The Good Left Undone," "Survive" and "Prayer of the Refugee" from their popular 2006 effort The Sufferer & the Witness.

As the sun set over the stunning Jones Beach Theater on a pleasant New York evening, fans moshed and belted out lyrics to songs like "Re-Education (Through Labor)" (off Appeal to Reason), "Satellite," "Help Is on the Way" and "Make It Stop" (from Endgame), plus "Give It All" (Siren Song of the Counter Culture) and "People Live Here" (The Black Market), which featured an exceptional solo from Rise Against frontman Tim McIlrath.

Thrice provided direct support, performing cuts from their latest album To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere, including songs like "Hurricane," "Black Honey," "The Long Defeat" and "The Window." The guys also doled out tracks from their earlier albums The Artist in the Ambulance, Vheissu and Major/Minor. Three Trapped Tigers opened the show, and will go stick with the tour until June 23 in Miami.
