High On Fire Bring ‘Mysteriis’ Brand of Sludge to Brooklyn, New York
Earlier this year, High on Fire chose to exit the 2012 Mayhem Festival so frontman Matt Pike could enter rehab for issues with alcohol. Now sober, Matt Pike, along with drummer Des Kensel and bassist Jeff Matz have hit the road with Goatwhore, Primate and Lo-Pan.
The crowd offered warm responses to both Lo-Pan and Primate, the latter of which features Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher. Blackened death metallers Goatwhore took the stage before Pike and the boys, bringing an incredibly tight set to the show, curating some of the night’s first full-on circle pits. Goatwhore seemed a little extra evil during this particular performance, focusing heavily on tracks that feature vocalist Ben Falgoust’s spoken word parts.
The crowd packed themselves seemingly to capacity in Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg, anxiously waiting to feel the presence of doom and sludge metal’s living legend Matt Pike. As High on Fire finally took the stage, all eyes were on Pike. Recording the performance for an upcoming live album, High on Fire commenced the show with the track ‘Serums of Liao’ from their 2012 album, ‘De Vermis Mysteriis.’
Pummeling further with tracks such as ‘Frost Hammer’ and ‘Speedwolf,’ the collective eye on the crowd remained on Pike, whose huge riffing along with insane shredding made eyes red and jaws drop. For anyone who has never seen Pike perform live, the seamless nature of his technical prowess is mind-boggling in person. There are still some dates left in the tour, so stop making excuses and go see the show live!
