On what turned out to be a scorching night with temperatures topping out over 100 degrees in Los Angeles, Linkin Park, Thirty Seconds to Mars and AFI brought their own brand of heat to the Hollywood Bowl.

For Linkin Park, the Hollywood Bowl show was a homecoming, bringing the band back to the city that helped launch their career. And with it being a hometown show, the group brought out a couple of friends for the night. Fellow Los Angelino and recent collaborator Daron Malakian of System of a Down fame came out to reprise his guitar contribution on 'The Hunting Party' track 'Rebellion,' enjoying a little guitar interplay with Brad Delson. Meanwhile Of Mice & Men's Austin Carlile showed off his powerful lungs matching Chester Bennington's aggression on a late set performance of 'Faint.' Carlile and Of Mice & Men will be supporting Linkin Park on their upcoming European trek, so the show was a precursor of things to come.

In order to pack the set with their many hits, Linkin Park shortened a few tracks, made medleys of others and offered a few alternate versions of songs that provided a fresh take on familiar favorites. One of the highlights came midway into the set where 'Castle of Glass' began with almost a hoedown drum beat, before becoming a more chilled out version with a piano transition segued into 'Leave Out All the Rest,' which was delivered as a true ballad. That led into 'Shadow of the Day' and 'Iridescent' all performed in more ballad-style.

Early set highlights included 'Given Up,' which found Chester Bennington flying through the air and delivering a perfectly timed jump with the band delivering a thunderous beat. Older tracks 'Points of Authority,' 'One Step Closer' and 'Papercut' were all met with rousing cheers, while 'Burn It Down,' Waiting for the End,' 'Numb' and 'In the End' highlighted the back half of the main set.

The encore consisted of abbreviated versions of 'Lost in the Echo' and 'New Divide,' a sped-up tempo for 'Crawling,' 'Until It's Gone' and 'What I've Done.' Finishing out the night, Mike Shinoda implored the melting crowd to give whatever energy they had left to a rousing version of 'Bleed It Out' that included a killer Rob Bourdon drum solo.

As for Thirty Seconds to Mars, the band's show turned into a homecoming celebration with the trio turning the gig into a full-on party. Entering to the epic 'Carmina Burana: O Fortuna,' the stage was awash in lights while Thirty Seconds to Mars flags could be spotted waving throughout the crowd. Jared Leto took the stage wearing a cape and a crown, playing to the audience during the opening song 'Up in the Air.'

Ever the showmen, each song brought something new. 'This Is War' found the audience sending large colorful balloon balls bounding around the crowd; 'Conquistador' sent a giant amount of confetti into the audience; 'Kings and Queens' found Jared Leto going into the audience and leading a sing-along; 'Do or Die' had the frontman rushing around the stage waving an American flag; and 'City of Angels' found the Los Angeles crowd lighting up the night sky with their cell phone flashes, while Tomo Milicivec and Shannon Leto upped the heaviness with a double dose of drumming. A late start shortened the band's set, causing an abbreviated version of 'The Kill,' before the set closing 'Closer to the Edge.'

AFI opened the night as the venue was beginning to fill following rush hour traffic. 'The Leaving Song, Pt. II' opened the show on a high note, with 'Girl's Not Grey' and the powerful 'I Hope You Suffer' following. Beginning with 'Medicate,' the audience began to pick up on the energetic performance AFI was delivering, with frontman Davey Havok offering a triumphant fist pump to the sky at the end of the track. The band's set later closed on a high note with Havok climbing through the seats into the front rows of the crowd during 'Miss Murder,' rallying the audience and sealing a stellar set by dropping the mic and walking off.

There are a handful of dates left on the Carnivores Tour featuring Linkin Park, Thirty Seconds to Mars and AFI. Those dates, along with Linkin Park's upcoming Brazilian and European tour dates, can be found here.
