My Chemical Romance vocalist Gerard Way paid tribute to Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, sharing some stories about the late musician with Nerdist. Way met his wife thanks to Linkin Park taking MCR on tour, with Bennington later being one of the few in attendance for Way’s wedding.

Since Bennington took his own life on July 20, countless musicians have written and spoken about how talented the Linkin Park singer was. It seems like almost every rock artist has a positive story about knowing Chester, but Gerard Way legitimately owes his marriage to Mindless Self Indulgence bassist Lyn-Z to Linkin Park.

Linkin Park picked My Chemical Romance as direct support for the 2007 Projekt Revolution tour, while the band chose Mindless Self Indulgence to headline the Revolution Stage. After the final show of the one-and-a-half month tour, Gerard Way and Lyn-Z tied the knot. “I was devastated to hear about Chester,” Way tells Nerdist. “He was actually at my wedding. Not a lot of people were there because we got married super quickly at the end of the tour when half the people had gone home. So there were literally only 30 or 40 people there, and he was one of them."

Way continues, “His band and bringing us on tour, that changed my life. I met my wife. We have an amazing life now and a daughter. My memories of that period and meeting Linds again are tied into Chester and his band.”

Having struggled with substance abuse himself, Way chose to address the topic of mental illness in his new comic book Doom Patrol. “I think a lot about mental health and it’s something I’ve always wanted to address in Doom Patrol, so I definitely think we’ll see a lot more of that now,” Way reveals. “I’ve been through depression, dark times, and therapy. I can really apply that stuff to these characters.”

Gerard Way also posted a tribute to Bennington via Instagram right after the Linkin Park musician’s death:
