Primus Release Claymation Video for ‘Candyman’

Primus are one oddball group, contributing some of the most affectionately quirky music to the rock canon, with last year’s album being another step on the predictably unpredictable road the outfit has been walking since their inception in 1984. Composing a re-imagining of the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory soundtrack, Primus released Primus and the Chocolate Factory With the Fungi Ensemble last year and have just unveiled the wacky claymation video for “Candyman.”

The song from the film takes on a jovial tone with a candy shop owner singing to his child patrons with sugary sweets flying around in a scene that has only played out in dreams since the movie’s release. The Primus interpretation of the tune takes on a decidedly darker tone, much like the cinematic Tim Burton reboot of the classic spin on the Roald Dahl book. The low, rolling croon of “Candyman” is quite ominous with a circus-like beat driving the song.

Bringing psychedelic overtones, Primus concocted a video that mostly follows a peppermint candy that is devoured by a man at the start. As it makes its descent past the mouth, it develops a face and appendages, trapped in this mixed up world of sugar-based characters. A clay version of Primus frontman Les Claypool makes a couple of appearances, almost seeming to taunt the peppermint in its travels.

A 5.1 surround sound mix of Primus and the Chocolate Factory was released on Friday, and can be purchased here.

Primus will be on the road supporting Tool in January along with opening act 3Teeth. For a full list of tours, check our 2016 Guide to Rock + Metal Tours.
