Dave Grohl and his Sound City Players are getting into a groove. With mostly the same lineup that appeared at the Sundance Film Festival and in Los Angeles and New York earlier this year, the giant music collective took over Austin's historic music venue Stubb's Thursday night (March 14) for a truly epic set at the South by Southwest festival.

According to Rolling Stone, the set clocked in at just under three-and-a-half hours, Grohl and his rotating list of musicians kept things moving, performing just shy of 40 tracks by the time the night was through. As has been happening at most of the shows, Grohl's Queens of the Stone Age cohort and former Eleven founding member Alain Johannes opened the show with a rocking set that features the Queens track 'Hanging Tree' and the Eleven standout, 'Reach Out.'

Shifting the bill a bit, Stevie Nicks, who had been closing shows, performed second, offering up the 'Sound City' soundtrack favorite 'You Can't Fix This' alongside the minimal backing of 'Landslide' and a stellar set closer in 'Gold Dust Woman' with most of the Foo Fighters present.

Masters of Reality's Chris Goss fronted the next performance, which also saw Rage Against the Machine's Brad Wilk pounding away on drums. They ripped through a set that included 'She Got Me (When She Got Her Dress On)' and the 'Sound City' favorite, 'Time Slowing Down.'

There was nothing slow about Fear frontman Lee Ving's set. The group embraced their punk roots ripping through 'Gimme Some Action' and other favorites. That was followed by a nostalgic performance from Rick Springfield that included such classics as 'I've Done Everything for You' and 'Jesse's Girl.'

The evening concluded with two standout sets. First up, Grohl took on drums and brought out his old Nirvana pal Krist Novoselic on bass to join Slipknot's Corey Taylor and Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen for an energized set of Cheap Trick tracks. Drummer Taylor Hawkins, who had fronted the Cheap Trick set in New York when the Slipknot / Stone Sour singer was unavailable, also joined Corey Taylor on vocals for 'I Want You to Want Me.'

The Cheap Trick set gave way to John Fogerty's standout performance to finish out the night. The rocker ripped through a joyous celebration of his solo and CCR catalog, playing such classics as 'Centerfield,' 'Born on the Bayou,' 'Bad Moon Rising' and ending with 'Fortunate Son.'
