Halestorm, Device + More Rock Weather-Shortened 2013 Carolina Rebellion Festival

2013 turned out to be a memorable year for the  festival, but not in the way organizers had hoped. Expanding to two full days at a new venue (Charlotte Motor Speedway) with a high profile lineup had anticipation and expectations at a high level. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not cooperate.

Day one of the festival went off without a hitch. There was already a sizable crowd when the opening band Young Guns hit the stage at 11:00 AM. It built steadily through the cool, overcast day, as bands including Otherwise, Sick Puppies, In This Moment and Asking Alexandria performed. were definitely among the crowd’s favorites. As their set ended, drummer Arejay Hale jumped into the audience for a little crowd surfing. Jacoby Shaddix from Papa Roach also jumped into the crowd during their performance, but did it while singing.

was also on the bill and one of the highlights of their set was guest Lzzy Hale dueting with David Draiman on ‘Close My Eyes Forever,’ performed for the first time live (Watch fan shot video below). The energy continued well into the night, with sets from Three Days Grace, Deftones and Limp Bizkit before Alice In Chains closed out day one on a high note.

Day two, however, was a different story. Rain had been forecast for Sunday all week, and the show was billed as “rain or shine.” With heavy rain in the morning, the opening was delayed. The weather cleared enough for some bands to play, including Pop Evil, All That Remains, Steel Panther, Hollywood Undead and Buckcherry. A couple of other bands (Nonpoint, Volbeat) had already cancelled their sets. After additional delays, the rest of the festival was cancelled, so fans were not able to see Sunday’s major players – Rise Against, Bush or Soundgarden.

Many concertgoers were extremely unhappy with that turn of events, and made their feelings known on Carolina Rebellion’s Facebook page. The festival did issue the following statement:

We want to apologize to our Rebels sincerely for the weather issues today. Because the situation regarding the storm was changing consistently, it made it tough for us to confirm schedules and performances on the fly. We did our best to play as many artists as possible, but our top priority will always be the safety of you all, the bands, and their crews, and today the weather just would not cooperate. Once we had definitive decisions from each of the artists, we brought the information to you all as quickly as we could. We are disappointed that we were not able to give you the Rebellion experience we were all looking forward to, and we will be making an announcement here and on our website Tuesday regarding how we are going to make this up to you. We appreciate your patience.
