Morbid Angel Debut Heaving New Song ‘Warped’ Live
A new chapter of the Morbid Angel legacy is being written as the death metal legends aim to rebound from the ill-fated 2011 album, Illud Divinum Insanus. The album's blend of death metal, industrial, techno and even rap-rock was met with some of the most scathing criticism and brutalization any band has faced and the ship appears to be righted as Morbid Angel debuted the new song "Warped" on the opening night of their headlining tour.
Reinstated frontman Steve Tucker addressed the Florida crowd, informing them, "This song is probably the most warped thing we've ever done. This song is called 'Warped.'" Embracing the Gateways to Annihilation era sound (Tucker's second with the band), the track employs a steamroller-paced, core-drilling riff, instantly relieving a crowd worried Morbid Angel would repeat their blunder from a few years ago.
"Warped" lays on the molasses, slowing down even more, accented by screeching pick scrapes and thunderous floor tom strikes. Towards the end, Trey Azagthoth's trademark manic soloing is on display, capping the song off with a droning squeal; a perfect climax that is the culmination of all the tension built throughout the track.
Morbid Angel's revamped lineup now includes Steve Tucker (bass, vocals), Dan Vadim Von (guitar), Scott Fuller (drums) and lone constant, Trey Azagthoth (guitar). The band is currently on a headlining run with support coming from Suffocation, Revocation and Withered and a list of stops can be found at our 2017 Guide to Rock + Metal Tours.
