The World Cup is finally over, with France defeating Croatia in the finals, but the real winners of the night were Russian punk protesters Pussy Riot, who stormed the field during the game dressed in vintage police uniforms.

With Russia hosting the 2018 World Cup, Pussy Riot activists Nika Nikulshina, Olga Kurachyova, Olga Pakhtusova, and Pyotr Verzilov invaded the globe’s biggest sporting event, with one protestor even giving a high five to player Kylian Mbappe, who scored France’s final goal in their 4-2 victory.

Those who made their way onto the field were tackled or apprehended by security and dragged off the pitch. This is the latest of Pussy Riot’s fiercely anti-Kremlin and anti-Putin stunts, and according to the collective, the four protesters have been jailed and denied access to their lawyer.

Pussy Riot posted a statement on their members along with their manifesto on Facebook:

Updates on The Football Field Action.
1. Four Pussy Riot members spent the whole night at the police station (note that there are no conditions to sleep, eat, take a shower etc).2. Activists have to be brought today to the court hearings, but the officials do not give us information where and when this process will take place. 3. The police does not let our lawyer, "Agora"'s Nikolay Vasilyev, to see the detained activists, don't let him talk to them. It's against the law, everybody has a right to talk to a lawyer. 4. Misdemeanor cases. Activists are charged with 2 misdemeanor cases (up to 15 days of detention). 5. Possible criminal article. At least two sources in the police reported to the Russian press (RBC) that the officials initiated a legal procedure of checking whether the criminal case can be opened or not.

The video of action is here: https://youtu.be/7zQGV7XBkLE

Just a reminder, with this action we're demanding:

1. Let all political prisoners free. Free Oleg Sentsov.
2. Not imprison for “likes”.
3. Stop Illegal arrests on rallies.
4. Allow political competition in the country.
5. Not fabricate criminal accusations and not keep people in jails for no reason.

A video of the demonstrators allegedly being interrogated by police was shared via Twitter and retweeted by Pussy Riot. According to the Associated Press, Pussy Riot member Pyotr Verzilov tells a man off camera, “I am for Russia, just like you, if you are for Russia.” The man reportedly responds, “I sometimes wish it was 1937,” referring to the violent Stalinist campaign of political repression. In 2012, members of Pussy Riot made worldwide headlines after being sentenced to two years in prison for “hooliganism.” They were freed in late 2013. Watch the activists invade the World Cup final in the video above.
