Tool are one of the most successful progressive rock bands of the past twenty years. Armed with a distinct, instantly recognizable sound of their own making, a highly developed visual aesthetic, and marked by a stubborn disinterest in typical music industry standards of self-promotion, career development, never mind release product cycles (to the continued frustration of their patient fans), Tool have produced just four albums and one EP (all of them platinum-certified; two of them number ones, one a number two!) over a 15-year timespan, and nothing since 2006. Nevertheless, the group remains active, despite a myriad of side projects, and a commercial force to be reckoned with; their influence limited only by the difficulty experienced by other bands who would try and and duplicate Tool’s unique sound. Simply put, Tool is one of those rare rock bands that truly exists outside the bounds of passing tastes and musical trends.
