Sammy Hagar: ‘I Would Only Do’ Van Halen Reunion ‘With Sam and Dave’
Estranged Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony set the table earlier this week, speaking about the prospects of a Van Halen reunion and stating that "now's the time" for it to happen with both David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar taking part. Now Hagar, who still plays with Anthony, drove home that idea in a new interview with the San Francisco Chronicle.
Hagar was being interviewed about the local Acoustic-4-a-Cure benefit, but was asked at the end of the interview about the demand for more music from Van Halen and Chickenfoot. He responded by addressing the Van Halen talk.
"That whole Van Halen thing lurking in the woods out there, I feel there’s a sniper out there — any minute the bullet is going to come flying in that says 'VH' on it, 'You’re it!' We’ll see what happens," stated Hagar, continuing, "I don’t understand them. I haven’t understood them in a long time. I would only do it with Sam and Dave anyway. I’d rather Dave (Lee Roth) go out and sing his own songs. I’ll sing my songs. That would be the ultimate show, I think. If we could do it that way, I would suck it up. It would be fun."
The talk of more Van Halen for Hagar started to heat up again in early 2016 when the singer exchanged tweets with Eddie Van Halen over the guitarist's birthday. Hagar, noticing the string of deaths in the music community, stated that he was interested in mending the relationship with the Van Halen brothers more than he was attempting to reunite with the band.
