Watch Iron Maiden’s Live ‘Wasted Years’ Video + ‘Scream for Me Sarajevo’ Bruce Dickinson Documentary Trailer
Iron Maiden spent a great deal of 2016 on the road, playing over 70 shows in more than 30 countries on tour in support of The Book of Souls. They'll be starting up the engines again this year and while fans wait for Eddie and the boys to come to a city near them, they can tide themselves over with the live video for the ever-catchy "Wasted Years" above. Still not enough? There's also a trailer for the Scream for Me Sarajevo Bruce Dickinson documentary below!
The video compiles footage shot from various shows around the globe, opening up with the familiar lead and steady kick drum as lights beam down on a massive crowd, all with fists and horns raised high into the night sky. "Do not spend your time worrying about those 'Wasted Years,'" Dickinson says before the charging energy of the verse comes into play.
As Maiden recap the recent past, the Scream For Me Sarajevo documentary digs further into the past to when Dickinson had split with the British legends, venturing off as a solo artist. In 1994, his band performed in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina while the city was under siege during the Bosnian War for Independence.
The clip opens up with footage portraying a picture of doubt and absurdity at the notion of trying to enter a war zone to play a concert. Cutting to a cheery Dickinson, he explained, "So, I got the boarding passes together and I said, "Col. Green, thanks very much, but you know what? We're going to give it a go at getting into Sarajevo. I don't know how we're going to do it, but we'll figure it out."
This is immediately followed by a clip of an explosion in the street, followed by more violence, gunfire and explosions as citizens flee. They then discuss traveling under cover in a lorry through the front lines with more gunfire in the background, explaining everyone inside could have been a potential crossfire victim.
Dickinson had previously spoken about the documentary on the Radio Sarajevo show, The Aebyss, stating, “Personally, yeah, I’ll play no matter what. Your concern has to be, actually, for people who don’t have a choice in the matter. I mean, it was my choice [in 1994] — actually our choice, collectively, ’cause we all, collectively, said, ‘Yeah, we’re all crazy enough to try and do this thing and drive into Sarajevo in the middle of a war and see if we can do and do a gig. And [laughs] we’re not quite sure when we’re gonna come back.'"
Iron Maiden will return to North America on June 3 with Ghost serving as the opening act. A full list of stops can be found at our 2017 Guide to Rock + Metal Tours.
