Veteran all-female rock act L7 have just released their first new song in 18 years. Inspired by the Trump presidency, L7 unleashed “Dispatch From Mar-a-Lago,” a song about storming the gates of Trump’s Florida resort, causing him to send an S.O.S.

Though President Trump was elected almost a full year ago, there hasn’t been the flood of anti-Trump political music that many expected… at least so far. With L7’s “Dispatch From Mar-a-Lago,” the band not only solidifies its comeback, but one of the first blatant sonic attacks on the Trump administration. Just listen to frontwoman Donita Sparks sing, “S.O.S. from the golden throne / ‘Mogul’s’ in deep s—t, he’s all alone / It’s not good, a riot in fact / The whole friggin’ country club is under attack.

Despite the subject matter of L7’s first new cut in nearly two decades, Sparks tells Pitchfork that Donald Trump’s rise isn’t what got the band to write again. “We [originally] had no intention of writing anything about the president. However, we were doing these Q&As at screenings of our documentary, which premiered in New York four days after the election. People were looking at us and literally grabbing our arms, like, ‘Save us!’

Sparks adds, “We did discuss it, because it's the bands that stick their necks out that get the most f—king shit, and we've gotten that before. ‘Hey, is this the first track we want to come out with? Are we sure we can handle the trolls? Are we ready to be called fat and ugly and old?’ But then we were like, ‘F—k, yes.’ Everybody gave it a thumbs up. Making fun of your government is a tradition older than this country, and that's what this track is.”

There’s currently no word on a full studio album from L7, but the new documentary on the band, L7: Pretend We’re Dead, comes out on Oct. 13 via video-on-demand and Blu-ray. The film premiered last year at the DOC NYC festival and continues to tour cinemas.
