The Melvins are back with a new album and are looking to shatter a Guinness World Record for the fastest tour of the United States, which they plan to do by playing every state with 51 shows in as many days.

It seems that a lot more rockers have been trying to get into the pages of Guinness Book of World Records of late. Jack White's attempt at "Shortest Concert" was denied by the world record authority, as was Earache Records' (87 second in length) attempt at the "World's Shortest Album" honors. Guinness reportedly offered this statement in regards to those looking to capitalize on the "World's Shortest" category:

The nature of competing to make something the ‘shortest’ by its very nature trivialises the activity being carried out, and Guinness World Records has been forced to reject many claims of this kind. As such, we have been forced to cease listing records for the shortest song, shortest poem and indeed the shortest concert.

Now that Guinness has ruled out the quick and easy route, rockers are aiming at more involved attempts to get into the record book. The Flaming Lips will attempt to break Jay-Z's record for "Most Live Shows in 24 Hours in Multiple Cities" and Jack White has jokingly shifted his focus to the unattainable "Most Metaphors in a Single Concert."

Now the Melvins have announced their very own Guinness World Record attempt, which is much more involved than the previously mentioned efforts. The band is looking to play every state in the U.S. in just 51 days. "We figured it was time for us to do something really crazy," said frontman Buzz Osborne. "51 shows in 50 states plus 1 on D.C. and all in 51 days? Jeez! I wonder if we can do it?"

The lengthy trek is in support of their just-released 18th album 'Freak Puke,' about which you can read more in our official review.
