Protestors Await Trump’s U.K. Visit With Green Day ‘American Idiot’ Chart Campaign
President Donald Trump will make his first visit to the U.K. since taking office on Friday (June 13). If one protest campaign is successful, Green Day's 2004 hit "American Idiot" will ascend to No. 1 in time for his arrival.
A dedicated Facebook page, Get American Idiot to No. 1 for Trump's UK Visit, was launched in preparation for Trump's trip across the Atlantic and has been intensifying its efforts over the last few days. A July 6 post indicated traction in the British charts, stating, "We've made a great start. Already No.1 on Amazon, and two versions in the iTunes Top 20."
As of publication time, "American Idiot" had yet to enter the Top 100 on the U.K. charts. If this campaign reaches its goal, it will mark the first time "American Idiot" has topped the British charts as it reached No. 3 at its peak.
Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has been critical of the Trump administration. In January earlier this year, he called for the President's impeachment after Trump's "Nuclear Button" tweet aimed at North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and his "depleted and food starved regime." The band also broke into a "No Trump, no KKK, no fascist U.S.A." chant during their performance at the American Music Awards in late 2016.
American Idiot was entrenched in politics from the beginning, inspired by the George W. Bush presidency, the Iraq war and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The record won the "Best Rock Album" at the 2005 Grammys and has gone platinum six times in the United States.
