Mastodon's "Sultan's Curse" won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards premiere telecast earlier today.

"Thank you to Judas Priest and Black Sabbath for creating this kind of music that we call home," drummer Brann Dailor said from the podium. You can see their full acceptance speech above.

Mastodon were seen as favorites coming into the ceremony, as the lone multiple nominee this year and a veteran of the Grammys, having been nominated for Best Metal Performance for "Colony of Birchmen" in 2007 and "High Road" in 2015 and Best Hard Rock / Metal Performance in 2012 for "Curl of the Burl." Metal was also represented at the ceremony via Body Count's performance of their nominated song, "Black Hoodie."

Other rock winners this year included the late Leonard Cohen for "You Want it Darker" (Best Rock Performance), Foo Fighters' "Run" (Best Rock Song) and indie rockers the War on Drugs' A Deeper Understanding for Best Rock Album. Additionally, Greg Kurstin, who produced the Foo Fighters' Concrete and Gold album (as well as songs by Beck, P!nk, and former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher) won Producer of the Year. This marks the twelfth Grammy won by the Foo Fighters.

This year was a surprisingly strong year for the metal category. Watch our video below to see what Loudwire's writers felt about the nominees.
