"Pop metal" is a term that's been thrown around since the mid-'80s with Def Leppard. It took on a new life with Babymetal and most recently Bring Me the Horizon and now Poppy is poised to help expand the genre. Having just signed with Sumerian Records, she's released a video for the song "Concrete," which finds her drifting away from bubblegum pop and into our realm.

The song is in a constant state of stylistic flux, instantly transitioning from eerie electronic music and whispered vocals to shredding metallic fury and right back into her bubblegum pop roots. Then comes the crunching breakdown. This all happens in less than a minute and it continues to be as frantic as The Beatles' most acid-drenched tracks.

Read the lyrics below, which are oh so innocently about needing the taste of blood in your mouth.

Bury me six feet deep
Bury me six feet deep
Bury me six feet deep
Bury me six feet deep
Bury me six feet deep, cover me in concrete turn me into a street
Bury me six feet deep, cover me in concrete turn me into a street

Chewy chewy, yummy yummy yummy
Sharp and pointy, yummy yummy yummy
Break me off a piece of that tasty treat
Sugar in my teeth, demons in my dreams
Watch me while I sleep for eternity

Bury me six feet deep cover me in concrete turn me into a street

Some people like candy
Some people like coffee
But these lifeless flavors don’t satisfy me
I tried to eat ice cream
I tried to drink tea
But I need the taste of young blood in my teeth

Chewy chewy, yummy yummy yummy
Sharp and pointy, yummy yummy yummy
Break me off a piece of that tasty treat
Sugar in my teeth, demons in my dreams
Watch me while I sleep for eternity
Sugar in my teeth, demons in my dreams
Watch me while I sleep for eternity

Poppy Poppy Poppy Poppy Poppy

Bury me six feet deep and just cover me in concrete please
Turn me into a street, turn me into a street
I don’t wanna wait forever and ever, please
Turn me into a street
Turn me into a street
Turn me into a street
Turn me into a street

This isn't her first foray into heavy music, though. Prior releases "Play Destroy," a collaboration with Grimes, and "X" both show the artist incorporating elements of rock and metal into her music. More recently, Fever 333 joined her for some true chaotic heaviness on her last single "Scary Mask."

Poppy is also the star of her own Z2 graphic novel, Genesis I, which was released earlier this summer. The graphic novel explores the origin story of the enigmatic singer and to purchase and get more information, head to the Z2 webshop.
