Soundgarden’s ‘Black Hole Sun’ Covered by 225-Person Choir
As the outpouring of grief over the loss of Chris Cornell continues, artists and fans alike have been paying their respects around the world. We’ve seen tributes in song take place onstage and in this video, it’s the fans’ turn to perform as a 225-person choir gathered to sing the Soundgarden classic “Black Hole Sun.”
Guided by just the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar onstage, the massive choir navigated the moving words of the iconic grunge track, stripping it down to the bare essentials, showcasing the true power and beauty of the vocal melody. During the mid-section, a group of female singers take on Cornell’s more impassioned delivery of the line “Black hole sun / Black hole sun.”
Of all the tributes laid out so far, this is among the most moving. Other standouts include Stone Sour leading a Cornell tribute at Rock on the Range, The Pretty Reckless’ Taylor Momsen fighting back tears while singing Audioslave’s “Like a Stone” and Linkin Park’s dedication of the somber “One More Light” during their Jimmy Kimmel Live! Performance.
Cornell died last week as a result of “suicide by hanging” as determined by the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office, though the singer’s widow, Vicky, and a team of lawyers, released a statement believing the ruling was made in haste as the results of a toxicology test had yet to be revealed. Vicky believes the prescription drug Ativan is to blame for Cornell’s out-of-character action and later penned a heartfelt open letter to her late husband.
