Listen to Dream Theater’s Dark New Song ‘Untethered Angel’
Dream Theater's new album, Distance Over Time, won't be released until next year, but they've given fans something to tide them over by way of the new single "Untethered Angel," which can be heard below.
The six-minute track is one of the prog legends' darker songs, portraying an ominous feeling of doom and dread from the foreboding acoustic opening to bleak, rhythmic chugs. Even over the chorus, which is undeniably catchy, Dream Theater never stray from this mood. It's a complex offering, as any fan would expect, rife with flashy, emotive soloing from both John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess.
"During the writing and recording process of D/T, ‘Untethered Angel’ was known as ‘Song 4’ to all of us as it was the fourth song written during the sessions. However, there has always been something about this track that just begged for it to be the album opener, even long before all of the songs were written,” explains Petrucci. "Fear is something that rears its ugly head at some point or another in all of our lives. Fear of the unknown, fear of taking chances, fear of making mistakes. If we are not careful, it can be debilitating and sadly prevent us from realizing our true potential. The world we live in can be a scary place and the thought of an uncertain future a terrifying notion, especially for today’s young people. Untethering from that fear and giving yourself up to the future’s countless possibilities is what will ultimately set you free."
Distance Over Time will be released on Feb. 22 through InsideOut Music and the group will support the record on a North American tour in March. See those dates below along with the album art and track listing.
