A lot of music fans remember when Orgy rocked radio airwaves in the late '90s with their cover of New Order's 'Blue Monday' and their own single 'Stitches.' Now, jump ahead to 2012, where a revamped lineup of the band tore up the stage at Irving Plaza in New York City last night (March 6), with support from One-Eyed Doll, Beta Plus Embryo and Star Killer.

While ears are still ringing today, the elbow of yours truly still aches. Frontman Jay Gordon (45 years old) looks younger than he did when Orgy released their debut album ‘Candyass’ and is just as vocally talented and energetic as he was in 1998. Gordon was energetic as he rocked the stage, along the way delivering a couple of high energy kicks, one of which accidentally made contact with my elbow. Nonetheless the band’s vigor was incredibly refreshing.

Although Orgy is made up of all new members, except Gordon, the band’s chemistry was infectious as they kicked off their set with ‘Suckerface’ and performed other tracks from ‘Vapor Transmission’ such as ‘Opticon,’ ‘107,’ ‘Eva’ and many others. They ended their set with three fan favorites off  ‘Candyass’ -- ‘Revival,’ ‘Stitches,’ and, of course, ‘Blue Monday.’

The duo One-Eyed Doll is made up of singer-guitarist Kimberly Freeman and drummer Junior, who seem to possess more energy onstage than many five-piece bands. If you get into Freeman’s theatrics onstage, she goes from softspoken story teller to a growling crazed vixen. This songstress has mastered the art of headbanging and high kicks while still managing to shred it up.

Beta Plus Embryo is a humble New York gem with a lot of talent with their memorable choruses, groovy drum patterns and catchy riffs. The band has a great balance between melody and heaviness with vocals that can go from harmonious to screeching at the drop of a hat. Beta Plus Embryo just released their full length album ‘Time Kills Everything’ in Europe as they make their mark in the States, as well.

New York based band Star Killer started off the night right with a forceful set. Frontman Jasin Cadic had some serious grills and showed them off for most of the time as he screamed tunes on stage. Go to Star Killer’s official site to download their free EP.
