Mike Portnoy Plays ‘Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction?’
It's Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction? time once again! In this week's edition of our signature series, we welcomed legendary drummer Mike Portnoy into our studio to prove and disprove what's written about him online.
There was plenty of Wikipedia information to comb through for Portnoy, as the percussionist has dedicated his talents to Dream Theater, the Winery Dogs, Adrenaline Mob, Avenged Sevenfold and many other acts.
We got into Mike Portnoy's childhood first, speaking with the elite musician about his earliest taste of fame at just six years of age. It was all uphill for Portnoy from there, forming Majesty, which would later become Dream Theater. The origin of Dream Theater's band name was almost correct on Wikipedia, but not completely, so thankfully we had Portnoy on hand to set the facts straight.
We cleared up more fallacies throughout Portnoy's visit, including Dream Theater's experience in Japan during the Great Hanshin earthquake in 1995. Portnoy also dispels the famous urban legend that he requested a five-year break from Dream Theater in 2010 and shares the exact reason why Portnoy parted ways with Avenged Sevenfold after filling in for late A7X drummer The Rev.
