Red Hot Chili Peppers have pumped out monster hits throughout the 2000s, much like they did in the 1990s. The band's follow-up to 'Californication' brought RHCP into the 21st Century with an increasingly sturdy sense of importance, as 'By the Way,' the title track of the band's 2002 album, began a run which would allow the band to sell over 13 million copies of the album worldwide.

Frontman Anthony Kiedis would refer to the single as "an über-bombastic assault of non-commercialism," despite its commercial success.
