There's a long history of celebrating the United States within the rather relatively short history of rock and metal and, here, we're attempting to bring you one metal or rock song that specifically calls out each of the 50 U.S. states.

Some are easy. The Red Hot Chili Peppers alone could probably populate a Top 10 of California mentions, while the "golden state" has also served as a muse for countless Beach Boys songs. Plus, how many karaoke versions or air guitar solos have been performed of the Eagles' classic "Hotel California"? But what songs come to mind when you think of Maine or Delaware? Believe it or not, there are some rock and metal songs that represent those northeastern states.

Sometimes you get an absolutely love letter to a state, like say "Sweet Home Alabama" from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Other times the titular or lyrical reference feels totally arbitrary. But while we're talking about Skynyrd, thank god they made a tour stop in Boise, Idaho.

For the most part, we managed to track down songs that specifically mention the state in the lyrics. In rare instances, you'll see some bearing a state in the title and not the lyrics or songs that shout out towns within a particular state.

So as we prepare to celebrate the anniversary of the U.S., let's provide you with a musical shoutout to each of the 50 states!
