In late September of last year, Philip Anselmo announced he had formed a new metal project called Scour. He revealed the band would take on a modern day black metal sound and now the first taste of new music has been released by way of the song "Dispatched."

The song (heard below) is highly reminiscent of Scandinavian black metal with a heavy emphasis on the Swedish take on the style. However, Anselmo employs a low growl rather than the typical raspy shrieks that dominate the genre. Melodic and hellishly evil, "Dispatched" brings to mind bands like Dark Funeral and Marduk, but without the relentless and concussive blast beat assault.

Scour is rounded out by John Jarvis (bass, Pig Destroyer), Chase Fraser (guitar, Animosity, Continuum), Derek Engemann (guitar, Cattle Decapitation) and Jesse Schobel (drums, Strong Intention). A self-titled EP will be released on July 15 through Anselmo's Housecore Records.

Last year, Anselmo spoke about the project with, stating, "The Scour thing was something that just popped up, and it's something that I think I can kill, something I can lay it out. They're short songs. It's a short EP, and that's something I can knock out... I think (there's) one of the fellows from Cattle Decapitation, but it's predominantly, in my ear, modern-ish black metal-sounding, thrashy black metal type stuff. I'm going to put my own spin on it. I don't have to sound like your boy from Gorgoroth [laughter] to get the point across, man. There's other ways of singing over that style of music, and I shall employ many styles."

The former Pantera frontman landed in hot water earlier in the year. Following set-closing performance of "Walk" at Dimebash 2016, Anselmo threw a Nazi salute before yelling "White power!" out to the crowd. He has since issued multiple apologies and has shied away from performing live with his sludge band Down.
