UPDATE: The County of Ventura in California has issued a death certificate for Sid Haig, listing his cause of death as cardiorespiratory arrest, as reported by 'TMZ.' The certificate also states that respiratory failure, aspiration pneummonitis, aspergillus pneumonia and a small bowel obstruction were contributing factors and that the actor had a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Actor Sid Haig, best known as maniacal clown Captain Spaulding or "Cutter" from Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses and its follow-up The Devil's Rejects, has died at the age of 80. His death was made public Monday (Sept. 23) by his spouse, Susan L. Oberg, in the form of an Instagram update.

Haig — born Sidney Eddie Mosesian on July 14, 1939 — had been hospitalized earlier this month after experiencing an unspecified "accident," as Entertainment Weekly reported. He died last Saturday (Sept. 21). See Oberg's heartfelt statement down toward the bottom of this post.

"On Saturday, September 21, 2019, my light, my heart, my true love, my King, the other half of my soul, Sidney, passed from this realm on to the next," she said. "He has returned to the Universe, a shining star in her heavens."

She continued, "He was my angel, my husband, my best friend and always will be. He adored his family, his friends and his fans. This came as a shock to all of us. We, as a family, are asking that our privacy and time to mourn be respected."

"Horray for Captain Spaulding," Zombie shared on Instagram. "Gone but not forgotten." The rocker also added a group photo with Sid, along with a lengthier tribute on his Facebook page, as seen below.

Two weeks ago, it appeared that Haig had fallen at home. Around that time, Oberg wrote on Haig's Instagram account that her husband had been in an accident, but she didn’t offer further details. A now-deleted comment from Sept. 13 stated the actor was "winning the fight" after taking a "nasty spill."

Haig makes an appearance in Zombie's new 3 From Hell, the long-awaited continuation of the murderous Firefly family's outlaw escapades. In addition to acting in most of Zombie's films, Haig appeared in over 75 movies throughout his lifetime including George Lucas' THX 1138, Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown and Kill Bill: Volume Two, and last year's non-zombie horror pic Death House. In the '60s, Haig began his acting career with parts on TV shows such as Batman, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.
