The news came as a surprise to many. Avenged Sevenfold announced that after four years, they've decided to make a change in the drummer position. And while they remain on good terms and are thankful for all that Arin Ilejay brought to the band, they've decided to go a different direction?

It appears from their statement as though the band already has something in play for a new drummer, but can't say anything about it as of yet. But that doesn't mean we can't have some fun speculating and getting a feel for who you'd like to see behind the kit.

There are a number of hard rock and metal drummers that could be in the market for a new gig. We can start by going back to the past. They've worked with Mike Portnoy in the past and the former Dream Theater and current Winery Dogs drummer is known for spreading his talents amongst several projects. Fans can also look at a pair of drummers -- Joey Jordison and Dave Lombardo -- who are no longer playing with the big name acts (Slipknot and Slayer, respectively) where they earned their reputation and would add some heaviness to any potential release.

We're aware that Motley Crue's Tommy Lee will be without his primary gig by the end of the year, and he's already shown his ability to play well with others (Right, William Corgan?). Nick Menza may not be reuniting with Megadeth, but could he be up for joining another one of rock's bigger bands? Could they lure noted session drummer Josh Freese to potentially join them beyond the studio? And what about the potential of onetime Guns N' Roses stickman Matt Sorum? Might he be looking for a new gig?

So what do you think? Would you like to see any of these drummers behind the kit for Avenged Sevenfold? Vote for your favorite below or offer other suggestions in the Comments section.
