AC/DC Drummer Phil Rudd Appeals Eight-Month Home Detention Sentence
Phil Rudd’s lawyer has revealed that he’s filed an appeal to the eight-month home detention sentence the AC/DC drummer received earlier this month. On July 9, Rudd was given the sentence after pleading guilty to charges of threatening to kill an employee and for possession of cannabis and methamphetamine. He began serving the sentence that same morning.
New footage has surfaced from Rudd’s sentencing, which shows an angry Rudd telling reporters on the scene to “get a f—king job,” as he left the courthouse. (Check it out above.)
Rudd was hoping to escape conviction, even though he pleaded guilty to the charges. According to the New Zealand Herald, during the sentencing his lawyer said that Rudd has since reconciled with the employee he threatened, and is going to pay him reparations for his behaviors. His lawyer also pointed out that this sentence would force Rudd to lose millions of dollars because he wouldn’t be able to tour with AC/DC.
The judge responded to the defense's wishes, commenting "You are now 61 years old, Mr. Rudd, you are not 21." Judge Ingram continued, “I'm simply not persuaded that you have done enough to establish the consequences of the conviction would outweigh the seriousness of the offending." He also stated that there was no direct evidence currently proving that Rudd was still a member of AC/DC and would therefore have been included on their current Rock or Bust tour.
AC/DC’s tour manager recently addressed Rudd’s status in the band when asked if he would play with the group on their New Zealand dates in December. Garry Van Egmond said, “Chris Slade will be on drums — he replaced Phil when he left the band some years back and he has been playing in the Rock or Bust tour worldwide… no confirmation that Phil has left the band permanently.”
The North American trek of Rock or Bust kicks off on Aug. 22 in Foxborough, Mass. The group play in Roskilde, Germany, tomorrow.
