Black Label Society’s New Song ‘All That Once Shined’ Is a Pit of Doom
It's been a big year for Zakk Wylde. He's been on the road with his Black Sabbath tribute band Zakk Sabbath, linked back up with Ozzy Osbourne and was voted Best Guitarist in the 2017 Loudwire Music Awards. He's keeping the momentum rolling into 2018 with a new album from Black Label Society, Grimmest Hits, and has just released a video for the doom-laden "All That Once Shined" single.
Wylde has always been one of Sabbath's biggest supporters and he makes his influences known on the new track. The gentle opening that spotlights the frontman's signature croon slides from subdued to crushing intensity with a bluesy lead dominating the crawling pace. There's a bit of a reprieve from the sorrow over the more emphatic chorus, but most of "All That Once Shined" stays true to its title, walling in the darkness while the grim reaper runs through posters emblazoned with the lyrics. We get a jolt at the mid-section with another Sabbath-inspired, "Supernaut"-like guitar lick and rolling groove as Wylde pays homage to his heroes.
Fans should now be able to piece together a rough idea of what to expect from the newest chapter in the Black Label Society legacy with "Room of Nightmares" serving as the first single off the forthcoming record. Much like "All That Once Shined," the song has a pervasively dark atmosphere, though Wylde's sense of hooks can help shine a light on it all.
Grimmest Hits will be out Jan. 19 on eOne and pre-orders are available now for physical and digital selections. The album will mark the first studio offering from BLS since 2014's Catacombs of the Black Vatican and the band will support the album with a headlining tour alongside Corrosion of Conformity with Eyehategod and Red Fang appearing on select dates.
