Disturbed Debut New Songs, Deliver Emotional Moments at Los Angeles Performance
Disturbed’s busy week continued Friday (June 11) as the band’s winter tour with Three Days Grace made its way up the coast to The Forum in Los Angeles. The veteran band released their Evolution album last fall, but held off their touring until 2019, with their trek kicking off earlier this week.
The night began with rock vets Three Days Grace taking the stage in support of their most recent album, Outsider. The band kept their set tight with familiar favorites, while also introducing newer chart-toppers “The Mountain” and “Infra-Red” into their set as well. The hour-long set concluded on a high note, with “Animal I Have Become” featuring a bit of The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” and finishing with “Riot.”
It was then Disturbed’s turn to take the stage, but not before fans were treated to a giant-screen video presentation reflecting on their career that led into the opening song of the evening, the hard-hitting Evolution favorite, “Are You Ready?” David Draiman and company performed upon a diamond shaped stage, with the singer calling out to the crowd, “My brothers, my sisters, my blood, speak to me!”
Songs like “Prayer,” “The Vengeful One” and “The Animal” kept the energy high early on, then after a cover of Genesis’ “Land of Confusion,” Draiman addressed the crowd. ”Time doesn't wait for us. Live every single moment you have with the people you care about with your whole heart all of your energy and all of your power and let permeate into your soul and stay in your memory. Once it’s there it’s never really gone,” said the singer leading up to the new Evolution song “Hold On to the Memories.” As the band performed, a montage of the group appearing with their idols, peers and family members made their way across the screen, along with a few photos of those who have left us too soon. From Black Sabbath and Jonathan Davis to videos with Chester Bennington and Pantera’s Dimebag and Vinnie Paul, it was a definite emotional highlight of their set.
While Draiman is often front and center, each of his bandmates got a bit of a spotlight during the new version of the band’s live show. Dan Donegan offered a blistering guitar solo during “Stupify,” while bassist John Moyer and drummer Mike Wengren got major solo moments following “Hold On to the Memories” leading into “The Game.”
Disturbed also made use of a second stage during the evening. The smaller set up gave the band a chance to get closer to the crowd, giving them an intimate moment as they played “A Reason to Fight.” Prior to the song, a video played speaking on addiction and suicide prevention. The side stage also played host to the live debut of the new song “Watch You Burn,” with Draiman keeping the theme going stating, “Demons of addiction and depression and I’m tired of losing people we loved and cared about so much. I miss Chester [Bennington], Chris [Cornell], Scott [Weiland]. Hell, I miss Prince.” Following the song, the band made their way through the crowd back to the main stage as they honored those we’ve lost with “The Sound of Silence.”
The band has long had solid ties to the military, and they paid homage to that during their set, arriving in military style uniforms to play “Indestructible” as the crowd shouted “U.S.A., U.S.A.” Bringing the body of their set to a fiery end, the band had streamers on fire fall from the ceiling so they could literally play “Inside the Fire.”
Finishing out the night, Draiman had spotted a disabled fan on a scooter who had made his way to the front of the barricade. Turning to the security guard, he asked if there was any way to get him past the barricade and up to a spot up front. “If he made his way to the front of the barricade, he belongs on my stage,” said the singer, with the fan named Daniel then brought up front to greet Draiman and finish the show with the night of his life as the band rocked out “The Light,” served up the live premiere of “No More” and finished with the high energy closer, “Down With the Sickness.”
