Coheed and Cambria — a band known for their expansive musicianship and ornate compositions, if not their choice in hairstyles — have stripped their song "The Gutter" down to its essential elements with an in-vehicle, a cappella performance of the Unheavenly Creatures cut. Impressively, it was captured on the first take.

Watch the video down toward the bottom of this post.

It's the latest in the segment "Auto-Cappella" from video magazine FreqsTV, wherein host Randy M. Salo challenges artists to "get in the car and sing some of their songs totally a capella," as he laid out in the below clip. That means the band must perform the selections using only their own voices, and without additional accompaniment.

Coheed and Cambria were clearly up to challenge, as shown in the a cappella performance in a car that incorporated the vocals of all four members of the group: frontman Claudio Sanchez, drummer Josh Eppard, guitarist Travis Stever and bassist Zach Cooper. The vehicular session was captured with a Zoom video recorder.

The prog-core band are on tour with Mastodon and Every Time I Die throughout the summer. Later in the year, they'll visit Europe for a series of concerts. See Coheed and Cambria's upcoming U.S. dates after the video.
