After the tragic death of GWAR guitarist Cory Smoot, the metal community did what it does best -- unite. On Saturday (Jan. 7), the CD Release / Memorial show for Smoot was a huge success, raising money for Smoot's pregnant widow Jamie.

The Canal Club last Saturday saw a mass of metal fans coming in to support the Cory Smoot Family Fund and to watch some awesome bands play live. Cannabis Corpse with special guest vocalist Randy Blythe of Lamb of God lent their talents to the benefit, as did GWAR frontman Dave Brockie with his side project the Dave Brockie Experience. The band Mensrea, of which Smoot was a member, headlined the night in tribute to their fallen brother.

A raffle also took place with prizes donated by Schecter Guitars, Guitar Center, GWAR, Municipal Waste and many more. Brockie even allowed Blythe to shave off five years worth of hair to be auctioned off as well. Brockie recently spoke to Full Metal Jackie about Smoot in an incredibly deep and revealing interview out of his Oderus Urungus character.

Smoot's widow Jamie offered her thanks to the fans who gave so generously:

I want to sincerely thank ALL the friends and fans for their amazing donations and support!! Thanks to Eve and Brent for organizing the events, to the businesses that contributed raffle prizes, and to the venues and bands for making the shows awesome!! You guys made Cory, the baby and me very proud!"

The show was also a release party for the late guitarist's solo record, 'When World's Collide.' The next benefit show is planned for Friday, March 16 with GWAR, Municipal Waste and Ghoul taking the stage for the Family Fund.
