Hear Motorhead’s Cover of David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’
Motorhead just released a never before heard cover of David Bowie's classic single "Heroes," via Rolling Stone. The cover comes off an upcoming covers compilation titled Under Cöver, due out Sept. 1.
The cover is a totally unexpected but welcomed change up from the original's sound. It takes the classic song's exuberance, and throws Motorhead's excellent heavy metal tones over it. Lemmy Kilmister sounds excellent as well, his gruff voice adding a different kind of texture to Bowie's original singing. "Heroes" will be joined by a host of other covers, including Motorhead's takes on Judas Priest, Sex Pistols, Metallica and others, with the recorded music dating back to 1992.
Of the song, guitarist Phil Campbell says, "It's such a great Bowie song, one of his best, and I could only see great things coming out of it from us, and so it proved to be. Lemmy ended up loving our version."
Drummer Mikkey Dee concurred, saying, "He was very, very proud of it not only because it turned out so well but because it was fun. Which is what projects like this should be – fun."
The only time their cover of "Heroes" was previously heard was the one time they played it live in 2015 as an encore in Germany's Aftershock festival. The studio version was recorded during the sessions for Motorhead's final 2015 album Bad Magic. It's good to know there's still a wealth of Motorhead greatness to be uncovered, this take on David Bowie being no exception.
