Last week it was announced that Maroon 5 will play the Super Bowl LIII Halftime show in Atlanta in February, which ended any speculation that a rock band would perform at the event. Metallica’s name gets thrown around every year by their dedicated fans, but producers of the show seem to always go with pop acts for the extravaganza.

In a recent interview with Los Angeles radio station KROQ, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and drummer Taylor Hawkins said that they have been approached about playing the Super Bowl, but they said that they never received an official offer.

Grohl says, “I’ve had multiple conversations over the years with them where they say, ‘We want to have a rock and roll band. Do you think you could do it? Do you think you could do a stadium?’ I was like, ‘Yeah man, we do it all the time.’” He adds, “We’re like, ‘Oh my god, I think we’re gonna do the Super Bowl!’ And then it’ll be Madonna or Katy Perry or someone like that.”

The Foos frontman said that he may have impeded the band’s shot at playing the coveted gig. “I actually got really hammered at the party in France once, and got to meet the dude that does the Super Bowl thing,” Grohl says. In a exaggerated drunken voice he adds, “I was like, ‘I don’t even want to do the Super Bowl! I used to want to do it. Now I don’t want to do it anymore!”

Taylor Hawkins chimes in, “Not to be negative on Maroon 5, but [the Super Bowl] always seems to be the final chapter in your career.” Grohl concludes, “We’re just trying to come up with excuses why we haven’t done it.”

While the Foo Fighters will not perform at the Super Bowl this year, they will take the stage at Cal Jam in San Bernardino, Calif. on October 6, along with Garbage, Greta Van Fleet and more. The group will be out on the road all next month playing North America. See their tour dates here.
