Green Day Announce Their First Book, ‘Last of the American Girls’
Last of the American Girls, the first book written by Green Day, will be released this fall, Rolling Stone has reported. Illustrated by cartoonist Frank Caruso, the tome — which takes its title from the band's 21 Century Breakdown track of the same name — will see release via Dey Street Books Oct. 29.
Co-authored by all three Green Day members collectively, the book about "true rebel girls" is described by its publisher as "an inspiring homage and handbook for the rebellious everywoman who refuses to capitulate."
The book's theme echos the story found in its namesake anthem. There, "Last of the American Girls" furthers the tale of 21st Century Breakdown character Gloria, a "one of a kind" woman "singing songs on the eve of destruction."
In 2013, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told Australian magazine Blunt that the song was originally written about his wife. However, in the course of finalizing the composition, the scope become more sweeping.
"That song started out as being about my wife and then I kind of started getting into more of my own beliefs," he said. "Anything from a little book of conspiracies to like playing vinyl records or something. It’s sort of like about an empowering, sort of subterranean kind of lifestyle, but at the same time there’s a new era coming in with the way we all need to live — like living in a disposable society or something like that but actually living off garbage and finding beauty in it in some way."
Late last year, Armstrong said he's "writing new songs" for the band's next album. Their latest studio effort, Revolution Radio, was released in 2016. Greatest hits collection God's Favorite Band followed the year after.
