Poppy Doesn’t Believe in Genres, Shares New Song ‘Fill the Crown’ — Exclusive Interview
If you're not already familiar with Poppy, climb aboard, because she just may be the next artist to shake the music industry. The singer strives to break genre barriers on her upcoming album I Disagree, and blatantly succeeds on her new song "Fill the Crown."
"I don't think genre really exists much anymore," Poppy told us when she dropped by the Loudwire studio. "I think a lot of music that's on the alternative charts isn't, to me at least, truly alternative. I think it's just pop, and it's another name for pop music."
The musician describes her sound as "post-genre," and to be honest, we couldn't think of a better name for it. The songs she's released from I Disagree so far — "Concrete," the title track, "Bloodmoney" and now "Fill the Crown" — all dabble in euphoric electro-pop, nu-metal and everything in between.
"I think we should create another genre. Maybe 'new alternative'," she added.
Poppy emerged on YouTube in January of 2015, and her brief, quirky videos quickly turned her into a star. Her focus became geared toward music when she released her debut album Poppy.Computer in 2017, followed by Am I a Girl? a year later. Both leaned toward bubblegum pop, with some heavier moments throughout the latter album. Her transition into heavy music was cemented earlier this year when she released the single "Scary Mask" featuring Fever 333, and later signed with Sumerian Records.
I Disagree, out Jan. 10, will signify a whole new chapter for Poppy. She hopes the album will convey the message, "Out with the old and in with the new, and not letting the fear of uncertainty stop you from going forward." This is a theme repeated throughout "Fill the Crown," as heard in the lyrics "You can be anyone you want to be / You can be free."

"Fill the Crown" Lyrics
You can be anyone you want to be
You can be free
You can be free
I believe you're the one who's meant for me
You can be free
Just come with me
Fill the crown, let them know we're fed
Poison the children
No peace of mind
Poison the family
Make the children cry
Poison the fountain
Empty your mind
Follow the leader
The leader is blind
You can be anyone you want to be
You can be free
You can be free
I believe you're the one who's meant for me
We can be free
Just come with me
Fill the crown, let them know we're fed
Baptize the children
Swallowed inside
Pray for the victims
Innocent lives
Poison the children
Watch from behind
Forgive your spirit
Forfeit your life
You can be anyone you want to be
You can be free
You can be free
You can live happily
Just turn the key
We can be free
Just come with me
Just come with me
If you're wanting somebody
Just call my name
Just come with me
I'll be there
Believe me Ill keep you safe
Just come with me
Fill the crown, let them know we're fed
